چکیده

A tracer dose of cholester01-4-~~C was given daily in the diet of six pregnant guinea pigs to establish an isotopic steady state. At the time of parturition, maternal and fetal blood and fetal tissues were collected and analyzed for cholesterol content and cholesterol specific activity. A comparison of these specific activities in neonatal and maternal serum indicated that about 22% of the fetal serum cholesterol was transferred from maternal blood. In the newborn, tissues generally had the same cholesterol specific activity as serum. Brain tissue was an exception in having a specific activity only 8.4% of that of serum. Dietary cholesterol did not increase serum cholesterol levels in the newborn but did increase the percentage of fetal cholesterol derived from the maternal circulation. The rapid transfer of ~holesterol-4-~4C across the placenta was indicated by the appearance of this isotope in the newborn 2 days after its administration to pregnant rabbits. A considerable amount of the cholesterol content of newborn guinea pigs and rabbits originated from the maternal blood.

Placental Transfer of Respiratory Syncytial Virus-Specific IgG in Iranian Mothers

Background: Respiratory Syncytical virus infection is the most common cause of bronchiolitis and viral pneumonia in infancy. Objective: To investigate the placental transfer of RSV-specific IgG in Iranian mothers. Methods: The antibodies were measured in sera of 146 mother/newborn pairs using a commercially available indirect Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). The studied subjects were ...

Placental Malaria: Decreased Transfer of Maternal Antibodies Directed to Plasmodium falciparum and Impact on the Incidence of Febrile Infections in Infants

The efficacy of mother-to-child placental transfer of antibodies specific to malaria blood stage antigens was investigated in the context of placental malaria infection, taking into account IgG specificity and maternal hypergammaglobulinemia. The impact of the resulting maternal antibody transfer on infections in infants up to the age of 6 months was also explored. This study showed that i) pla...

Prediction of placental drug transfer using the human placental perfusion model.

The placental perfusion model and a newly developed complementary computational model are reviewed. Examples are provided, where the computational model can be applied to adjust drug pharmacokinetic data obtained from the perfusion model to more closely resemble the in vivo placental transfer of therapeutic agents. After modelling the data, placental perfusion experiments can be used to predict...
